Now if you’re really serious about using an underwater digital camera to capture those wacky and funny moments underwater, I suggest that you buy a specialty camera.

There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. As a make-do, it woks quite well; converting an ordinary digital camera into an underwater camera.

If it is your aim to take some underwater images then there is some advice I can give you to improve the quality of the images.

Remember that as you farther down you go underwater, the more the light diffuses. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. The water also has a strange effect on how the pictures look giving them the appearance of being magnified. Use the cameras viewfinder to check that what you want in the image is actually in the viewfinder or the shot will be wasted.

On the subject of checks prior to going underwater, it is a good idea to make sure the digital camera case doesn’t leak so submerge it underwater for a short while just to confirm it will be ok when you dive. Make sure that no grain of sand or piece of hair is stuck in between the seal to make sure that water will not permeate the case and thus wet your camera in the process. If you a couple of silica gel packs then these can be placed in the case but make sure they do not obstruct the lens or camera controls.

Optional lenses are often available so if you can add these to your underwater digital camera then do so. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.

Make sure when you re-surface that you rinse off the camera full to make sure all the salt water is washed off the camera as crystals of salt can break the camera seals. In particular where sand is present then a stream of water to rinse it off is best.
