The art of underwater photography is only carried out using special underwater digital cameras operated by professionals from many scientific disciplines. Marine biologists and scientists use underwater digital cameras to capture marine life and thus are able to study the life and properties of marine life. Waterproofing a camera is not an easy thing to do so many, so called, underwater cameras aren’t really designed for that type of work

Buying one of those underwater digital cameras isn’t really likely but you could buy one of the cheaper options if you are only going below the surface for a short while and not to deep.

Owing to the constant problems faced by underwater cameras, there aren’t enough manufacturers who are willing to spend time developing something that has to overcome the problem of water and electronics combined with pressure. Manufacturers have found it is easier just design a watertight case that goes around the digital camera instead. Cases like this, inexpensive in comparison to a real underwater digital camera, can for a while make you believe that you too are some kind of underwater photographer.

As this is a completely different area to normal photography you would be well

The water has a strange effect on light as I am sure you have experienced from time to time; it is called diffusion and the deeper you dive the more this distortion takes place. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. The water also has a strange effect on how the pictures look giving them the appearance of being magnified. You will have to pay more attention using the viewfinder to make sure you are achieving the shot you want.

It is a good idea to make sure that the camera won’t leak whilst you are diving so just hold it under the water for a few seconds to be on the safe side. It has not been unknown for a grain for sand to be breaking the seal on the case To help combat any condensation, place a silica gel pack or two inside the camera case carefully making sure the camera will still work.

Optional lenses are often available so if you can add these to your underwater digital camera then do so. It is possible to get really close to some subject for great close-up shots using a macro lens.

Make sure when you re-surface that you rinse off the camera full to make sure all the salt water is washed off the camera as crystals of salt can break the camera seals. Sometimes, small grains of sand gain access to the case and in this instance rinsing with water is the most preferable solution.

If you want to know more I suggest you to go online to the web sites of Canon, Sony and Nikon who will be able to help you more.
