There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. Of course this kind of compromise is enough for some people who are still able to take pictures underwater with their digital camera.

Before you rush off and buy one of these clever cases there is some information about underwater shooting you need to know.

The water has a strange effect on light as I am sure you have experienced from time to time; it is called diffusion and the deeper you dive the more this distortion takes place. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. The water also has a strange effect on how the pictures look giving them the appearance of being magnified. To ensure the correct image will be taken you will have to pay a little more attention to the shot you are taking.

On the subject of checks prior to going underwater, it is a good idea to make sure the digital camera case doesn’t leak so submerge it underwater for a short while just to confirm it will be ok when you dive. which will allow water to access the case so look for this as well. To help combat any condensation, place a silica gel pack or two inside the camera case carefully making sure the camera will still work.

Ask your underwater digital camera supplier if you can add extra lenses to complete the kit. Macro lenses will help you capture small things without getting too close and startling your subject.

Make sure when you re-surface that you rinse off the camera full to make sure all the salt water is washed off the camera as crystals of salt can break the camera seals. In particular where sand is present then a stream of water to rinse it off is best.
