I for one would love to have a proper underwater digital camera but this is not likely to happen and I really don’t go into the sea often enough to make it worthwhile.

Owing to the constant problems faced by underwater cameras, there aren’t enough manufacturers who are willing to spend time developing something that has to overcome the problem of water and electronics combined with pressure. A working option has been to manufacture a transparent plastic case that holds the digital camera in place. Of course this kind of compromise is enough for some people who are still able to take pictures underwater with their digital camera.

If you are shooting with your underwater digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best underwater images.

Water diffuses the light and the farther down you go the more this diffusion occurs. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. The water also has a strange effect on how the pictures look giving them the appearance of being magnified. Be sure to check your underwater digital camera’s viewfinder to check the right picture angle and size that you want.

You don’t want to have a camera that leaks when you go underwater so before you dive, check that the case is waterproof by holding it below the surface for a few seconds. It has not been unknown for a grain for sand to be breaking the seal on the case It is also advisable to put a silica gel pack or two inside the case of your underwater digital camera as long as they don’t disturb the camera’s operation.

Ask your underwater digital camera supplier if you can add extra lenses to complete the kit. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.

Also, remember to always wash of salt when you’ve used it under salt water because if the salts are not washed off, in time they will crystallize; and cause leaks in your camera case. The best way to rinse of an underwater digital camera where grains of sand are present in particular is with a flow of clean water.
