Usually underwater digital cameras are used by serious professionals and are not a general piece of photographic equipment you can buy just anywhere The cost of underwater digital cameras is usually to prohibitive for just keen amateurs to afford so it is left for serious scientists to use this piece of modern day technology In fact this is such a sophisticated area that most people will have no interest in underwater digital cameras except to see the animals that live below the surface.

Now if you’re really serious about using an underwater digital camera to capture those wacky and funny moments underwater, I suggest that you buy a specialty camera.

Owing to the constant problems faced by underwater cameras, there aren’t enough manufacturers who are willing to spend time developing something that has to overcome the problem of water and electronics combined with pressure. Manufacturers have found it is easier just design a watertight case that goes around the digital camera instead. This type of casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

As this is a completely different area to normal photography you would be well

Light distorts or diffuses underwater an effect that is made worse at greater depth. To over come the darkening of images that will happen because of the diffusion, certain white balance settings can be altered which will cure the problem. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. Many novices make the mistake of not checking the viewfinder carefully to make sure they are going to take a picture containing exactly what they want in the final shot.

Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the case. It is quite easy for something as tiny as a human hair to break the camera case seal and this will lead to a leak. It is also advisable to put a silica gel pack or two inside the case of your underwater digital camera as long as they don’t disturb the camera’s operation.

Most underwater digital cameras come with optional lenses so don’t be afraid to add these lenses to your underwater digital camera kit. If you enjoy looking at things close up then you will need to fit a macro lens.

The seals on the underwater digital camera need to be kept clean and free fro contaminants so ensure the camera is thoroughly rinsed of when you return to the surface. In particular where sand is present then a stream of water to rinse it off is best.
