Usually underwater digital cameras are used by serious professionals and are not a general piece of photographic equipment you can buy just anywhere Although not exclusively used by scientist, the underwater digital camera does see some action in the world of film. Many waterproof cameras are ok but they cannot be submerged for more than a meter below the surface of the water
In fact the only way you are really going to get to use an underwater digital camera is if you buy one of these small specialist cameras that are able to be submerged for short periods.
There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. Of course quality camera manufacturers have overcome this problem by creating watertight plastic cases that encompass the digital camera. This type of casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

Remember that as you farther down you go underwater, the more the light diffuses. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than those images you took while on land so to avoid this, use white balance adjustment to help with natural colors. This diffusion effect also magnifies the image to give the impression the zoom function was used. Be sure to check your underwater digital camera’s viewfinder to check the right picture angle and size that you want.
Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the case. Even a silly thing like a strand of hair can break the seal so check carefully before submerging. Silica gel packs can be handy if you are able to fit them inside the camera case as they will attract any condensation that could cause a problem.
If you have a chance you should try and fit additional lenses if at all possible to your underwater digital camera to increase the type of images you can take. Macro lenses will help you capture small things without getting too close and startling your subject.
Also, remember to always wash of salt when you’ve used it under salt water because if the salts are not washed off, in time they will crystallize; and cause leaks in your camera case. In particular where sand is present then a stream of water to rinse it off is best.
It is usually the better digital camera manufacturers that will manufacture the more specialized products like Nikon, Canon and Sony
