The only people I have seen use proper underwater digital cameras are marine botanists and other scientific personnel Although not exclusively used by scientist, the underwater digital camera does see some action in the world of film. Many waterproof cameras are ok but they cannot be submerged for more than a meter below the surface of the water
The only way you are going to come close to taking proper underwater shots is by purchasing one of those little disposable units that can be used safely for about 50cm to 1 meter underwater.
There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. A working option has been to manufacture a transparent plastic case that holds the digital camera in place. As a make-do, it woks quite well; converting an ordinary digital camera into an underwater camera.
If it is your aim to take some underwater images then there is some advice I can give you to improve the quality of the images.
The water has a strange effect on light as I am sure you have experienced from time to time; it is called diffusion and the deeper you dive the more this distortion takes place. To over come the darkening of images that will happen because of the diffusion, certain white balance settings can be altered which will cure the problem. Another thing you will notice is that underwater images always look as though the zoom has been used. To ensure the correct image will be taken you will have to pay a little more attention to the shot you are taking.
Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the case. Make sure that no grain of sand or piece of hair is stuck in between the seal to make sure that water will not permeate the case and thus wet your camera in the process. Small silica gel packs can be useful if they can fit in the case without causing an obstruction.
Optional lenses are often available so if you can add these to your underwater digital camera then do so. It is possible to get really close to some subject for great close-up shots using a macro lens.
Also, remember to always wash of salt when you’ve used it under salt water because if the salts are not washed off, in time they will crystallize; and cause leaks in your camera case. It is not uncommon to experience the odd grain of sand getting into the case which will cause problems later on so rinse the case with a flow of clean water.
Manufacturers who can supply this type of equipment are Sony, canon and Nikon, so to find out more log onto their web sites.
