Underwater Camera Covers - Waterproof Fun With Your Digital Camera

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

The people that use genuine underwater digital cameras are those where it is usually used in the course of their work, as these cameras are very expensive. It’s usually the likes of marine biologists and other scientific personnel who use underwater digital cameras to study life beneath the waves. However, a much cheaper solution would be to purchase a transparent underwater camera cover to protect your regular digital camera. These underwater camera covers work quite well in converting a regular digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

If it is your aim to take some underwater images while using an underwater camera cover with your digital camera, then here are some tips I can give you to improve the quality of your images.

Lighting Issues with Underwater Camera Covers

Underwater, light distorts or diffuses, an effect that is made worse at greater depth. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo would out of the water, but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. This diffusion effect also magnifies the image to give the impression the zoom function was used. With the underwater camera cover in place, use the cameras viewfinder to check that what you want in the image is actually in the viewfinder or the shot will be wasted.

Is Your Underwater Camera Cover Really Waterproof?

You don’t want to have a camera cover that leaks when you go underwater so before you dive, check that the case is waterproof by holding it below the surface for a few seconds. Make sure that no grain of sand or a rib of hair is stuck in between the seal to insure that water will not permeate the case and thus wet your digital camera in the process. Small silica gel packs can be useful if they can fit in the cover without causing an obstruction.

Extra Lenses and Underwater Camera Covers

If you have a chance you should try and fit additional lenses to your digital camera before you purchase an underwater camera cover. Most decent waterproof camera covers will allow for additional lenses, but it is always a good idea to check. Even if you don’t have any extra lenses at present, it might be worth allowing room for them when it comes to getting an underwater camera cover for your camera. This way you won’t need to get a new waterproof cover when you buy a macro or zoom lens sometime in the future.

Protecting Your Underwater Camera Cover

When you re-surface be sure to rinse off your camera cover fully insuring all the salt water is washed off the cover as crystals of salt can break the cover seals. It is not uncommon to find the odd grain of sand getting into the case, which will cause problems later on. You can rinse the camera cover with a flow of clean tap or bottled water.
