Buying one of those underwater digital cameras isn’t really likely but you could buy one of the cheaper options if you are only going below the surface for a short while and not to deep.

Owing to the constant problems faced by underwater cameras, there aren’t enough manufacturers who are willing to spend time developing something that has to overcome the problem of water and electronics combined with pressure. Of course quality camera manufacturers have overcome this problem by creating watertight plastic cases that encompass the digital camera. Of course this kind of compromise is enough for some people who are still able to take pictures underwater with their digital camera.

Before you rush off and buy one of these clever cases there is some information about underwater shooting you need to know.

If you have ever place you hand in water and noticed how it looks different then you will understand light diffusion and this problem gets worse the deeper you go underwater. The result of this is a darkening of the captured image so adjustments to the white balance are needed. This diffusion effect also magnifies the image to give the impression the zoom function was used. Be sure to check your underwater digital camera’s viewfinder to check the right picture angle and size that you want.

It is a good idea to make sure that the camera won’t leak whilst you are diving so just hold it under the water for a few seconds to be on the safe side. It is quite easy for something as tiny as a human hair to break the camera case seal and this will lead to a leak. If you a couple of silica gel packs then these can be placed in the case but make sure they do not obstruct the lens or camera controls.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your underwater digital camera by adding other lenses that may come with it. Lenses that allow you to get really close to the subject can also normally be fitted jus ask if the camera has a macro facility.

When you have finished using your underwater digital camera be careful to wash it thoroughly to make sure all the salt water is removed as the salt will crystallize and this can cause leaks. The best way to rinse of an underwater digital camera where grains of sand are present in particular is with a flow of clean water.
