The art of underwater photography is only carried out using special underwater digital cameras operated by professionals from many scientific disciplines. Using an underwater digital camera requires skill as you are operating in a foreign environment To be waterproof is to resist the water to certain levels, submerging it under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.

In fact the only way you are really going to get to use an underwater digital camera is if you buy one of these small specialist cameras that are able to be submerged for short periods.

There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. Cases like this, inexpensive in comparison to a real underwater digital camera, can for a while make you believe that you too are some kind of underwater photographer.

Before you rush off and buy one of these clever cases there is some information about underwater shooting you need to know.

Remember that as you farther down you go underwater, the more the light diffuses. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. Another thing you will notice is that underwater images always look as though the zoom has been used. To ensure the correct image will be taken you will have to pay a little more attention to the shot you are taking.

You don’t want to have a camera that leaks when you go underwater so before you dive, check that the case is waterproof by holding it below the surface for a few seconds. Make sure that no grain of sand or piece of hair is stuck in between the seal to make sure that water will not permeate the case and thus wet your camera in the process. Small silica gel packs can be useful if they can fit in the case without causing an obstruction.

Ask your underwater digital camera supplier if you can add extra lenses to complete the kit. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.

One problem with using an underwater digital camera is that if it is not rinsed off thoroughly, the salt can crystallize and cause leaks later on. Sometimes, small grains of sand gain access to the case and in this instance rinsing with water is the most preferable solution.
