Buying one of those underwater digital cameras isn’t really likely but you could buy one of the cheaper options if you are only going below the surface for a short while and not to deep.

You see, water pressure is the real problem for these cameras as well as water leaks Manufacturers have found it is easier just design a watertight case that goes around the digital camera instead. This type of casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

If you are shooting with your underwater digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best underwater images.

The water has a strange effect on light as I am sure you have experienced from time to time; it is called diffusion and the deeper you dive the more this distortion takes place. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than those images you took while on land so to avoid this, use white balance adjustment to help with natural colors. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. Use the cameras viewfinder to check that what you want in the image is actually in the viewfinder or the shot will be wasted.

It is a good idea to make sure that the camera won’t leak whilst you are diving so just hold it under the water for a few seconds to be on the safe side. which will allow water to access the case so look for this as well. Small silica gel packs can be useful if they can fit in the case without causing an obstruction.

If you have a chance you should try and fit additional lenses if at all possible to your underwater digital camera to increase the type of images you can take. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.

When you have finished using your underwater digital camera be careful to wash it thoroughly to make sure all the salt water is removed as the salt will crystallize and this can cause leaks. Sometimes, small grains of sand gain access to the case and in this instance rinsing with water is the most preferable solution.
