The art of underwater photography is only carried out using special underwater digital cameras operated by professionals from many scientific disciplines. Marine biologists and scientists use underwater digital cameras to capture marine life and thus are able to study the life and properties of marine life. To be waterproof is to resist the water to certain levels, submerging it under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.

Buying one of those underwater digital cameras isn’t really likely but you could buy one of the cheaper options if you are only going below the surface for a short while and not to deep.

There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. Manufacturers have found it is easier just design a watertight case that goes around the digital camera instead. Of course this kind of compromise is enough for some people who are still able to take pictures underwater with their digital camera.

There are a few things you need to be aware of if you are taking photos underwater.

Remember that as you farther down you go underwater, the more the light diffuses. The result of this is a darkening of the captured image so adjustments to the white balance are needed. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. You will have to pay more attention using the viewfinder to make sure you are achieving the shot you want.

It is a good idea to make sure that the camera won’t leak whilst you are diving so just hold it under the water for a few seconds to be on the safe side. Especially check the seal to make sure that a grain of sand or even a hair hasn’t broken the seal. Small silica gel packs can be useful if they can fit in the case without causing an obstruction.

Ask your underwater digital camera supplier if you can add extra lenses to complete the kit. Lenses that allow you to get really close to the subject can also normally be fitted jus ask if the camera has a macro facility.

The seals on the underwater digital camera need to be kept clean and free fro contaminants so ensure the camera is thoroughly rinsed of when you return to the surface. The best way to rinse of an underwater digital camera where grains of sand are present in particular is with a flow of clean water.

It is usually the better digital camera manufacturers that will manufacture the more specialized products like Nikon, Canon and Sony
