The art of underwater photography is only carried out using special underwater digital cameras operated by professionals from many scientific disciplines. Although not exclusively used by scientist, the underwater digital camera does see some action in the world of film. To be waterproof is to resist the water to certain levels, submerging it under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.

Now if you’re really serious about using an underwater digital camera to capture those wacky and funny moments underwater, I suggest that you buy a specialty camera.

There are very few true underwater digital cameras, as cameras are electronic and cannot withstand water and water pressure. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. This type of casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

Before you rush off and buy one of these clever cases there is some information about underwater shooting you need to know.

Water diffuses the light and the farther down you go the more this diffusion occurs. Owing to the waters diffusing action, all images end up darker than a normal photo out of the water but this can be avoided if a few simple settings on the cameras white balance facility are adjusted. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. Use the cameras viewfinder to check that what you want in the image is actually in the viewfinder or the shot will be wasted.

It is not uncommon for waterproof case to spring a leak so before you go on your dive, check that the camera I still watertight by submerging it for a couple of seconds. It is quite easy for something as tiny as a human hair to break the camera case seal and this will lead to a leak. Silica gel packs can be handy if you are able to fit them inside the camera case as they will attract any condensation that could cause a problem.

Ask your underwater digital camera supplier if you can add extra lenses to complete the kit. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.

The seals on the underwater digital camera need to be kept clean and free fro contaminants so ensure the camera is thoroughly rinsed of when you return to the surface. Sometimes, small grains of sand gain access to the case and in this instance rinsing with water is the most preferable solution.

It is usually the better digital camera manufacturers that will manufacture the more specialized products like Nikon, Canon and Sony
